Networking was an integral part of Social Media Marketing World. In order to prime us for the best networking experience possible, Larry Benet was brought in to speak on the most powerful skill anyone can have.
Surprisingly, that skill is not your ability to create images, craft headlines, write copy, or make a perfect Google+ post. It’s not something they have a college degree for (that I know of) and it’s not something they teach you in school.
Your ability to connect is the most powerful skill you can have.
This is part of the Social Media Marketing World 2014 series. You can read the rest of the posts in the series here.
How to Connect With Anyone Anywhere
Think of something you want right now. Is it reasonable that thing is in the room in some way right now? Odds are there is someone in the room that either has what you want or knows how to help you get it.
Additionally, you can always find something of value to give to someone else. Become a community of value.
Get to know the person
- What do you do for fun?
- Tell a little bit about your family.
- What’s your guilty pleasure?
- What are you most proud of?
- What’s one thing on your bucket list?
- What’s your favorite charity?
- What brought you to the conference?
Larry then asked the crowd the following questions:
How many of you want to get into any event for free and have people buy you free drinks while you’re there?
How many of you are great note takers and recorders of events like this? [Asks those people to stand]
Everyone look at the people standing and buy them drinks.
While this was simple in nature, it did serve as a great way to connect with the other conference attendees as he was taking us through these questions with those around us. I would have loved to learn a little bit more about the nature of connection or something that was more than just “ask your neighbor about themselves and then tell them about you.”
