The essence of creativity: stare at what’s right in front of you, tilt your head, and find a different angle.
In order be creative, you have to see the world differently. See what no one else sees. Then, do something with it that no one else has done.
Imagination is really the key. Being able to see what could be, rather than what is.
Einstein understood this when he talked about Imagination Vs. Knowledge. Everything we know and understand is how Einstein defined knowledge. Imagination he defined as “the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”
For some people, this is a natural gift. They look at something and immediately see what other people don’t see. The synapses in the right side of their brain begin constructing new possibilities.
Other people have to work a little bit harder as the left side of their brain has become stronger and more inclined to dwell on the reality. Their creative muscles have atrophied. They haven’t exercised their creativity and as a result it has become weakened.
I refuse to believe that there is anyone on this earth who is uncreative. If you are alive & breathing, you are a creative being. Period.Click To Tweet
Whether you’re a creative powerhouse, or a left-brainy trying to rediscover your creative chops, here’s my challenge to you: See one thing differently every day.
To grow your creative muscles you need to practice. Day in and day out. Just like a bodybuilder hits the gym, you need to workout your creative brain daily.
Here’s what you can do– look at something and ask yourself, “what is this?” Once you’ve answered that question, ask yourself this question:
“If it wasn’t what it is, what could it be?”
Every day find something common, tilt your head at it and see it differently. Ask yourself what it could be if it wasn’t what it is. Then, put some action behind it– do something with it.
- Write about it.
- Sketch it.
- Tweet something funny about it.
- Caption it.
- Meme it.
- Write from it’s perspective.
- Photograph it.
- Instagram that joint!
For the folks reading who don’t get that last reference, joint is urban slang for an object. Just watch this video at about 2:16 in. You’ll get it.
The point is, look at something differently, then take action. I encourage you also to courageously share it with the world. Don’t keep it to yourself.
It may not be a masterpiece, but that’s not the point. The point is to exercise that muscle, and grow your creative ability every single day.
