How To Create A Meme The Easy Way With Google+

create a meme with google+

Did you know that you could easily create a meme using Google+? It only takes a few simple steps and you can create a piece of potentially viral content.

First, let’s define what a meme is:

meme /mēm/

  • An element of a culture or behavior that may be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, esp. imitation.
  • An image, video, etc. that is passed electronically from one Internet user to another.

Well, that doesn’t really tell us a whole lot. Here’s my working definition of a meme:

meme – A funny picture that includes an equally (or more) funny caption. (Better meme definition here.)

Here’s an example:

Take an image, throw a funny caption on it and tah-dah! You have a meme! Let’s not overcomplicate things.

How to Do It

Google+ has an onslaught of great photo editing tools, but this one tool makes it super easy to create a quick meme yourself! Here’s what you have to do:

  1. Start a new Google+ post and upload an image to it.
  2. Hit the little “text” icon underneath the photo once it uploads.
  3. Write your hilarious caption.
  4. Hit “Share”.

Congratulations! You’ve just created a meme! It’s that easy with Google+! Here’s one I made with the same baby image I used for the top of this post:

baby google+ meme

Not too shabby! And just an FYI– the photo doesn’t have to be beautifully Photoshopped beforehand. That’s just something I had to do because I’m OCD.

*Note: This function is not available on the Google+ mobile app.

Pro Tips

A few Pro Tips to make it sure it looks great:

  • Stick to only the top and bottom lines. Only use the middle if it doesn’t get in the way of the image.
  • Try not to make it too long, less than 7 words per line.

So go grab a funny photo, think up something quirky and witty to caption it with and post it! Then tag me in the post, +Dustin W. Stout, so that I can see it too!

I’ve never heard of Piclarious, great find! I don’t know of any others off the top of my head. I bet you could easily Google it and find a bunch. Sad that you can’t do it on Google+ anymore.

One can use a meme generator such as Piclarious: http://piclarious.com/site/create/en
It’s super fun and easy to create new memes with a clever punch line.

Can you recommend another good meme generator?

Hey Patrick! Maybe I should point out that this post is over 2 years old and Google+ has changed dramatically since then. This is no longer possible inside the new Google+ UI.

Your instructions are totally erroneous. I did exactly as you instruct here: I opened a window to start a new Google+ post. And loaded a pic to it. And that’s it. There no text icon under the photo. There’s only the icon to load another photo and the icon for Google Maps. That’s it. No other icons in the post window anywhere. So, I’m finished with you and your meme assistance is finished and worthless after two keystrokes!

    Thanks!

Thanks Jinia! The post you’re talking about is here.

I’m sure Dustin will jump in with the link but he has a great list of images for online use..

I use my own, http://publicdomainarchive.com/, or http://mopho.to/ . That way, no questions!

Ps..Mophto is from Dustin’s original image post!

That would be the glass half full, or the ‘it’s not the system it’s you that’s the problem’, or even the ‘it’s just navigationally challenging’ way of looking at it. 😉

    Haha! Great image Karen!

I think you’ll find that it’s just different to navigate around on Google+. The approach is much different and forward-thinking than most other websites out there and if you’re not used to it there may be a slight adjustment period. Once you get used to it, every other site will seem cumbersome. lol

I’ve come across your blog by searching for information about corporate colour schemes and, after subscribing to the newsletter, I’m working my way through previous posts. So much great stuff, thank you so much for sharing.

Here’s my first try at using the text tool to make a meme. Works well and easy to use https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/105002153305720955164/105002153305720955164/posts Oh and by the way thanks for the explanation of meme which I see being used all the time and kind of gathered what it referred to be didn’t really understand what it was from definitions I have seen.

The thing I find though is that Google+ is so cumbersome to navigate around.

It’s funny that I stumble upon this post now, days after having the notion of trying to do something similar..I guess my “meme” (if I can even be cocky enough to call it that) is aimed at social media, content creating types, who, like me and you and all of us, are just trying to go viral.. You can check it out here http://robertryan.ie/going-viral and hope it tickles someones funny bone..

  24. Dustin W. Stout Avatar

That’s a great question Kathie! I want to write about that issue more in depth, but in the meantime this post might be helpful.

With some photos though (especially the common meme photos) it’s nearly impossible to find the original creator of the image.

What about photo copyright? Should one check on that before grabbing an image and adding text?
