How To: Social Media Series

social media series

There is a serious problem in America today. Well, scratch that, there are a lot of serious problems in America today. One of those problems, however small it may seem by comparison, is something I want to address on this blog.

The problem in which I am speaking of could be keeping you from being as effective as you should be in your career, organization, or even your personal life. This is a problem I will dedicate much of this blog to (aside from the reason it was first started). The problem I’m talking about is Social Media Unawareness.

“Social Media isn’t a fad, it’s a fundamental shift in the way we communicate.”

If you haven’t seen this yet, it will blow your mind: Social Media Revolution

Social Media is here to stay, and I want YOU to be able to use it to your advantage. I want you to be able to effectively use it for your company, brand, organization, church, or just your social life. I want to help you become not only literate, but social media savvy. (I like the word ‘savvy’.)

To start the series off, I wanted to know what you have questions about. I have plenty of things I can start writing on (in fact I have about half a dozen post ideas stored in Evernote waiting to be written), but I honestly wanted to know what people are curious about, confused about, or just plain dumbfounded with. So, in the comments section below write whatever questions you have about social media. Ask anything! Anything at all! I dare you!

Some examples would be:

  • What’s a hashtag?
  • How do I get rid of annoying people in my Facebook stream?
  • How can I gauge my company’s social media effectiveness?
  • What is this secret code language that Twitter people seem to use?How in the world did Charlie Sheen get so many followers even though he’s a lunatic?

Stuff like that.

I will respond to every question that I can, and I may even dedicate an entire post to YOUR question! So what are you waiting for? ASK AWAY!

So far, I have covered the following topics:

  1. What Is Social Media
  2. The Top Social Sites You Should Be On
  3. Twitter for Beginners
  4. 5 Uses For Twitter Lists

This list will continue to grow, so be sure to check back to see how the series progresses!

That’s a great question Luke. The thing with YouTube is that most people do just want to go on and watch funny video’s and move on with their life. If you’re looking to build a community that engages with your content, you must create clear calls to action. Be blatant about Subscribing, and always ask a question that evokes a response.

This is also another question which deserves a dedicated post. Noted. Thanks again!

I post links to both Facebook AND Twitter – I will usually let my Twitter followers in on stuff first though. 😉

This is a great question and deserves a well written response. I will be dedicating an entire post to this. In the meantime, here are a few suggestions:
    1. Get connected with Twitter (if you haven’t already)
    2. Find blogs that target similar communities of people that your blog targets and begin engaging in those communities (commenting on other blogs drives a LOT of my traffic).
    3. Become an avid reader of http://www.tentblogger.com – he’s awesome and a MUST read for aspiring bloggers.

I think by engaging in social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) you will be able to not only market yourself as a professional, but also to give yourself more credibility for potential future employers. More an more studies are being done that show a majority of companies using social media to recruit new employees.

I have been trying to convince several family members who own businesses that this is not a passing fancy and that the future of their business relies on word of mouth (or finger) via Social Networking. I have reconnected with extended family I have been estranged from as a result of immediate family conflict for 20 years. The impact of Social Media is so far reaching that those stuck with their lives in the yellow pages and an envelope and going to be left behind. Great blog Dustin, I’m glad I found your site.

Do you post links to new blog to Twitter or FB? I don’t want to miss the follow ups.

With YouTube, there seems to be a big divide between the crazed subscribers who want to know about every video update and every change made and the people who don’t realize YouTube isn’t just for finding random videos, but a community of personalities and talents. What would you think would be a good way to bridge the gap between getting people to watch a video on YouTube and move on with life and getting them to want to create accounts and subscribe. This goes for any social network I guess, I just think YouTube is one where people have 2 definitions for what it is for 🙂 Wow . . .that was long

What is the best way to drive traffic to our blog? Typically, we’ll share it on Facebook. Ultimately, we want to move into using the blog for our business. We’re new to using social media as a form of advertising.
